Can Players Still Sprint in World Cup Extra Time? The “Upstream Secret” of Carnosine: β-Alanine Is the True Core of Endurance

July 10, 2026

Share

Football is a high-intensity competitive sport. Completing a 90-minute match often means players have already reached their physical limits, while extra time presents an even greater challenge to endurance.

Many influencers promote carnosine as an “anti-acid miracle ingredient” and claim it can help athletes break through training plateaus. However, some people still experience muscle weakness after taking it.

Today, let’s uncover the underlying mechanism: oral carnosine supplementation is generally difficult to achieve the expected results. Compared with directly supplementing its precursor β-Alanine, its efficiency is usually lower, although individual differences may exist.

Carnosine Looks Powerful, but Oral Supplementation Has Limited Effects

Before understanding why direct supplementation works better, let’s first explore the powerful functions of carnosine.

Two Core Functions of Carnosine

Carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide stored in skeletal muscles and acts as an “acid-buffering sponge” inside muscles.

Binding Hydrogen Ions and Delaying Fatigue

During high-intensity strength training, HIIT, or 800-meter running, anaerobic metabolism produces large amounts of H⁺ (hydrogen ions). The accumulation of hydrogen ions causes muscle acidity, directly leading to reduced power output, slower movement, and fatigue.

Carnosine can bind hydrogen ions and help maintain muscle pH balance. This allows athletes to complete more repetitions during bench presses and deadlifts or maintain high-intensity output for a longer period.

Antioxidant Protection and Shortened Recovery Time

Carnosine can remove free radicals generated during training, reduce oxidative damage in muscles, shorten post-exercise soreness recovery time, and support both muscle growth and physical recovery.

The Critical Limitation:

Oral Carnosine Is Directly “Broken Down” in the Body

The human digestive system and blood serum naturally contain large amounts of carnosinase.

When carnosine is consumed orally, it is difficult for intact carnosine to directly reach muscle tissue. Due to the high activity of carnosinase, carnosine is rapidly broken down in the bloodstream into β-Alanine + L-Histidine.

β-Alanine is then transported into muscle cells, where it is used to synthesize carnosine. A small amount of carnosine may also be eliminated through normal metabolic processes.

Multiple scientific reviews have confirmed that, when supplemented at equivalent molar amounts, there is no significant difference between carnosine and β-Alanine supplementation in increasing muscle carnosine levels.

However, at the same molar amount, carnosine has a molecular weight approximately 2.4 times higher than β-Alanine, and carnosine ingredients are significantly more expensive.

In other words, brands and consumers may spend more money while achieving less efficient results.

Directly Supplement β-Alanine to Increase Muscle Carnosine Stores

Since carnosine is broken down after ingestion, and the goal is to increase muscle carnosine levels, the correct approach is not to consume the finished product, but to provide the body with the raw materials required for synthesis.

Human muscles contain carnosine synthase, and carnosine synthesis requires two raw materials:

β-Alanine + L-Histidine

Among them, β-Alanine is the absolute rate-limiting factor.

Daily consumption of meat and eggs already provides sufficient L-Histidine, which is generally enough for the body’s needs.

However, the amount of β-Alanine naturally synthesized by the human body is extremely limited, directly restricting the speed of carnosine synthesis.

This is also the fundamental reason why many people have relatively low muscle carnosine levels.

Experimental Data Reference

Daily supplementation of 4–6g β-Alanine for 4 weeks can increase muscle carnosine levels by approximately 60%.

After continuous supplementation for 10 weeks, the increase can reach around 80%. High-intensity exercise endurance improves significantly, with time to exhaustion extended by an average of 13%.

β-Alanine Fits a Wide Range of Sports Nutrition Products

As the key upstream raw material for carnosine synthesis, β-Alanine is suitable for a wide range of sports nutrition products and can become a powerful ingredient for brands seeking product differentiation.

Pre-Workout Supplements

Combined with creatine, β-Alanine improves both explosive power and endurance, helping enhance training performance and muscle-building efficiency.

Sports Energy Drinks and Powders

Suitable for ball sports and endurance athletes, helping relieve continuous fatigue during exercise.

Professional Performance Supplements

A core ingredient for high-intensity training and competitions such as football, swimming, and CrossFit.

Competitive Pet Nutrition

Suitable for racing pigeons, racing dogs, racehorses, and other competitive animals to improve exercise endurance. The mechanism of action is similar to that in humans.
